MBONI
LUX

Mboni Lux approaches the image as a room the unconscious has already entered. Her practice began in production design, where an object, a colour or the distance between two bodies can disclose what a character cannot say.
That cinematic attention moves through her visual work as a language of symbols: desire displaced into architecture, tenderness shadowed by unease, the familiar returning in an unfamiliar form. An embrace may also be a threshold; an interior, the scene of something remembered without having been fully known.
Drawing on the logic of dreams and the tensions of the uncanny, Lux composes images that ask to be looked at twice. Meaning gathers slowly, between what the image offers and what the viewer brings to it.
Her production-design work includes Alison O’Daniel’s The Tuba Thieves (2023), presented at MoMA’s Doc Fortnight and the MOCA Artist Film Series in 2023.
